12 Tips for Teen Hair

Proper hair care begins in your teens. Without proper guidance, you could reach adulthood with seriously damaged hair. Managing your hair should begin in your teens. Be aware that your hair care needs will change throughout your lifetime. The following are tips that every teen should know to keep their hair gorgeous, healthy and minimize damage.

  1. Go to the salon for a trim every 6 weeks to promote hair health. Do not take a DIY approach to hair cutting.
  2. Use the right products for your hair type. They should be gentle and contain no harsh chemicals.
  3. Wash and rinse hair in lukewarm water. Hot water opens hair cuticles and leads to damage. Cool water seals the hair cuticle.
  4. It’s fun to experiment, but don’t use color treatments indiscriminately.
  5. Don’t rub your hair dry. Let it air dry or use a blow dryer. The best solution is a microfiber towel or head wrap. It’s gentle on hair, will remove a large portion of the moisture from hair, and minimize time under the blow dryer.
  6. Make minimal use of hot styling tools and keep them on low settings to minimize damage.
  7. Protect locks from chlorine in pools, salt from the ocean, wind and sun. Wear a wide-brimmed hat that will protect hair and your skin.
  8. If you develop dandruff, treat it immediately with a medicated shampoo. Excessive washing can exacerbate the problem.
  9. Use a soft bristle brush or a brush with rounded ends to minimize the potential for damage. Don’t brush too vigorously.
  10. Be aware of what you eat. The food you consume fuels hair growth and plays a significant role in its health and appearance.
  11. Forget the late nights and get sufficient sleep. The body, including your hair, uses sleep time to repair and refresh the entire body.
  12. Don’t comb or brush hair when its wet. If you must, use a wide toothed comb. Begin at the ends and gently work your way toward the scalp.
