Can My Flat Iron Prevent Frizziness?
South Florida is known for its high humidity levels that can cause your hair to frizz and act like it has a mind of its own. While flat irons are designed to straighten and smooth hair, much will depend on the condition of your hair, the amount of regular care it receives, and the type of flat iron you’re using.
A tourmaline coated flat iron provides better results for reducing frizz since it produces negative ions and removes static. They’re very effective and helps seal in moisture to fight frizz. Others prefer ceramic hot irons and some brands claim their products reduce frizz by up to 65 percent for 10 hours or more.
There are four factors that cause frizziness. They’re the diameter of the hair shaft, amount of curl, how damaged hair is, and the environment. In South Florida, that environmental factor means humidity. Your hot iron is effective for sealing in moisture and helping to prevent environmental humidity from entering.
Hair has a natural shape that it assumes when no styling tools are used. Humid air is moisture laden. That outside moisture enters hair, binds with proteins, and gives your hair temporary amnesia in the sense that it forgets the shape that it would naturally take.
Frizz occurs when individual hair strands are going in multiple directions. If your hair is dry or damaged, it’s more susceptible to humidity and frizziness. As hair forgets it’s natural form, it moves in different directions and causes static that compounds the problem.
In addition to using your flat iron, there are other measures you can take to fight frizz. Use products that moisturize and protect hair. Gently towel dry hair whenever possible using a microfiber towel. Gently comb hair to remove tangles, working from the bottom to the scalp. Wet hair is most vulnerable to breakage and a wide-toothed comb is essential. Avoid heat styling whenever possible. You may also want to use a serum to smooth the hair cuticle.
