Caring for a Dry Scalp

A dry scalp is a common problem and one that can be easy to remedy. Before dry scalp can be accurately dealt with, it’s critical to ascertain the underlying cause. It could be anything from lack of hydration, too frequent use of dry shampoo, or dandruff. A dry, itchy scalp can occur at any time of the year and can be extremely uncomfortable. The following are common causes of dry scalp in no particular order.

Allergies

Companies work hard to create formulas that can be used by the largest number of consumers. However, sometimes an individual may develop an allergy resulting in a dry, itchy scalp. Simply changing products may alleviate the problem, but if the allergy is severe individuals may want to consult with a dermatologist to determine which ingredients are causing the reaction.

Hair Products

The hair products required for a chosen style can begin to build up on the scalp. They form tiny flakes over time that can itch. Overusing a dry shampoo can create the same symptoms, while shampooing too often will dry hair and scalp.

Shampooing too infrequently opens the door to product build-up. An extensive number of formulas are available for scalp and hair hydration. Switching products, shampooing more or less often, and cutting back on dry shampoos are all remedies that will help.

Psoriasis

For those with a dry scalp caused by psoriasis, a prescription shampoo may be required. Psoriasis is a common problem that causes scaling, redness, and flaking. The scaling and flaking are typically thicker and more pronounced than that associated with dandruff.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Better known as dandruff, it causes many of the same symptoms of dry scalp but it’s the exact opposite. It’s an over-abundance of oil or over-production of skin yeasts. Too much oil blocks the scalp’s ability to shed dead skin cells efficiently. They begin to build up and flake. A good dandruff shampoo is the key and can be alternated with a regular shampoo, but be sure to use the dandruff formula at least once or twice a week.
