Cosmetics Safety Tips, When in Doubt, Throw it Out!

If you’re anything like the rest of the Boca Raton gorgeous women out there, you most likely love to wear makeup. However, you might not be aware of another issue and one that could cause you some serious problems. Unless made with organic products, cosmetics can be dangerous and should be used with caution. Most (especially organic) have a shelf life and will need to be disposed of once they reach that timeframe. In this week’s blog, we discuss some safety tips for you to use as a guide with your favorite products.

Discard Mascara After 3-Months

First and one of the most underrated products on the market to cause issues is mascara. One of the most common ingredients found in the mascara is Propylene Glycol which can help promote diseases such as dermatitis. In some cases, people have reported having rashes and irritated eyes. Mascara’s shelf life is about 3-months. Be sure to ask or check the package for the time this product was put on the market for sale as this timeline includes the inception of the product itself. Better to be safe than have further complications.

Organic Cosmetics and Skincare Products Have Less Shelf Life

Next, keep in mind mineral and natural products such as bronzers have an even LESS time for normal use. Throw these out or replace them after 2-months as they most likely don’t have preservatives that will keep them fresh longer.

Lead is Found in Most Red Lipsticks

Other than the mascara and mineral or organic make-ups, chemicals such as lead are another culprit that needs to have some special attention. Lead is found in most Red Lipsticks because it’s the substance that helps give the red it’s hue. Be sure to get rid of this type of lip enhancement the boot after a couple of months and use it sparingly.

Dioxane 1&4 Can Lead to Immune Deficiencies

In addition to lipsticks, some shampoos contain 1,4 Dioxane which can disrupt the immune system. While this is a chemical used during the manufacturing phase, it’s also a real culprit to causing health issues. Be sure to check your labels for this byproduct to prevent further health problems.

Lastly, sunscreen is one product we Floridians can’t get enough. While we work on our tan, avoid sun damage and keeping skin from burning, we forget Oxybenzone is a part of the ingredients. Oxybenzone can disrupt hormone balance and can also damage the skin cells. Look for or make your sunscreen you know won’t bother you.

We hope these tips and information helps you to stay safe while looking beautiful. Just remember, “When in Doubt, Throw it Out”!
