Do Blondes Really Have More Fun?
Women have been told since the earliest days of advertising that blondes have more fun. The theme has been used in film, TV, books and multiple marketing campaigns. A variety of research projects have addressed the question and it turns out the answer is yes. However, it’s yet to be determined if it’s because people have bought into the blonde is better narrative or if there are mitigating factors.
Research shows that blondes tend to go out more often, up to 3 times per week, compared to their dark-haired friends. Blondes feel they have more fun and believe they’re more fun to be around. They think they’re generally more confident and youthful than women of other hair colors. Blondes also perceive themselves as being more glamorous and sexier.
The good girls and heroines in fairy tales are primarily blond, with the evil sisters, stepmothers and other female figures typically depicted as dark haired. TV, film and commercials present blonde women as young, beautiful, fun-loving, and vivacious. Their dark-haired counterparts are usually portrayed as older and more serious.
A 2009 Cornell University study demonstrated that blondes generally make more money than brunettes, earn better tips, and are more likely to be in positions of power. They’re more likely to seek and receive a pay raise. A variety of celebrities saw their careers take off like a rocket after going blonde. Excellent examples are Marilyn Monroe and Lady Gaga.
One thing is true, however. Going blonde is an easy way to hide shades of gray. Maintaining dark locks can be exhausting. Every bit of hair regrowth exposes gray roots for the world to see. The most important aspects of hair color are if it makes the individual feel good and actually enhances their appearance. Blonde isn’t the best color for everyone and make some people appear older.
