How to Strengthen Your Hair

Strong hair is healthy hair that resists damage and looks lovely. If you find yourself with locks that have split ends, appears dull, is color-treated, or frequently just won’t behave, there are multiple ways to help make hair stronger and resist the ravages of blow dryers, flat irons, and pollution.

Strong hair begins on the inside out. Your hair is made up of protein and if you’re not eating enough protein and getting enough vitamins, not only will your hair suffer, but so will your health. Meat, fish, nuts and whole grains are good sources of protein, along with eggs, seeds, cottage cheese, and beans.

Hot styling devices dry hair, robbing it of its natural oils, moisture, and contributing to split ends and damage. If you have to use styling tools, lower the heat and use a protectant. Another way to maximize moisture retention is to use a cooler temperature to rinse hair before leaving the shower.

One of the best methods to keep hair strong is to use a shampoo and conditioner that contains argan and/or coconut oil. It moisturizes, shines, and minimizes breakage and split ends. You can also gently massage a small, quarter-sized amount directly into your hair if you prefer.

Some hairstyles offer a more sophisticated look, but they can also cause more damage to hair than others. Tight pony tails and buns and hair worn frequently in the same style weaken hair and make it more prone to breakage. Alternating the style or the location of a bun or pony tail will aid in minimizing damage.

Simply brushing and combing hair can damage it if not done properly. Make it a habit of gently brushing hair each night from the scalp to the tips to distribute natural oils. Use a wide tooth comb with wet hair and gently comb out tangles.

Don’t forget to get regular trims to eliminate split ends and mitigate the potential for additional damage. Healthy hair is strong hair that resists damage from tight hairstyles and hot styling tools. If your hair is damaged, forego dyeing and highlighting. Consider a professional hot oil treatment instead.
