Is cheap shampoo bad for your hair?
Feeling a little overstretched this month? Having to cut costs on luxury products so you can afford to buy all those Christmas presents you’ve been promising everyone? Trust us when we say – you are not alone. Some months are harder than others to make the money last longer, and it can be tempting to cut back on luxury goods and good quality items when things are feeling a little tight.
But, while you will probably be OK choosing a cheaper bubble bath than you would usually indulge in, buying a cheap shampoo could actually do more harm than good. Salon shampoos have a hefty price tag for a reason. Formulated to include high-quality ingredients, and created using extensive scientific research, cheap shampoos will never really be able to perform as well as your regular brand.
In fact, in some cases, cheap, low-quality shampoos could actually be bad for your hair. If you really must cut costs when it comes to hair care, consider the following hidden ingredients before your reach for a budget brand:
Parabens
Parabens were first introduced in the 1950s and were used to help preserve a wide range of beauty products. Containing a heady concoction of different chemicals, parabens are added to almost all deodorants, toothpaste, shampoos, conditioners body lotions and even makeup to stop the growth of fungus and other damaging microbes.
In 2004 a British study found a link between the use of parabens and the disruption of natural hormone functions, that could lead to an increased risk of breast cancers. Now banned in Europe, the FDA has been slow to follow suit, and some cheap shampoos may still contain potentially dangerous chemicals.
Sulfates
Cheap shampoo brands are likely to contain higher levels of Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS), the cleaning agent that also makes shampoo foamy. While you may believe that it is the foam that helps to get your hair clean, it is actually quite the opposite. The addition of sulfates to your shampoo can lead to damage the hair follicles, weaken the hair structure and even stunt hair growth. Some studies even suggest that the long-term use of sulfate laden cosmetics can have a negative effect on the immune system and even lead to irreversible skin damage.
Silicone
Another nasty that can be found in cheaper shampoos is silicone. This additive can initially help your hair to look shiny, but silicone is actually really bad for your hair can make it look dull and lifeless over time. For longer lasting shiny, healthy hair choose a shampoo that is silicone-free.
Water
Yep – cheaper shampoo brands are often packed out with good fashioned H2O to add volume to the packaging (but not to your hair) and dilute the number of active ingredients needed in every bottle. While water is not dangerous for your health or your hair, it does make cheap shampoo’s a poor investment in the longer term.
Unlike salon formula shampoos, where a little goes a long way, the water content in cheap shampoos will mean you need to use a generous amount every time you wash your hair. In time, you will need to buy more bottles of the same product, making your savings negligible. Buy right first time, and you’ll only have to buy once!
