Let it Grow

A short haircut can be a flattering change and make you appear years younger, but if you don’t like it you can always grow it out. Hair grows approximately ½ inch per month, but some heads of hair grow at faster or slower rates. If you’re in a hurry to have your long locks back, there are some measures you can take to hasten the process.

Trim Regularly

Keeping split ends trimmed will actually help your hair grow. Split ends weaken hair and can lead to breakage. Trimming is recommended ever six to eight weeks, but it will be different for hair that’s fine, coarse or color-treated.

Natural Oils

Don’t go to bed without thoroughly brushing your hair to distribute its natural oils and keep hair moisturized. Make sure to start at the scalp to stimulate circulation. The hair’s natural oils are essential for preventing damage and staying healthy.

Forego Color

Changing the color of hair can result in damage and going blond is especially detrimental to hair. Beaching causes more split ends and breakage and any chemical treatment will impede hair growth.

Avoid the Heat

Heated styling tools dries out hair and robs it of its natural oils, which leads to breakage and split ends. If heated styling tools must be used, apply a heat protectant and use the lowest heat setting. Top off hair with a cool rinse at the end of a shower to help seal in moisture. Use care when brushing wet hair – it’s especially susceptible to breakage when wet.

Feed Hair

It can’t be said enough – feed the body to feed the hair. A healthy diet rich in protein promotes hair growth. Be sure to include foods such as whole grains, fish, nuts, and beans, along with those high in trace minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin A, C and E. Meat is a good source of protein and those that don’t obtain sufficient amounts of the essential substance are more prone to shedding. You may also want to add a daily vitamin.

Silk Pillowcase

You can pamper yourself and your hair by sleeping on a silk pillowcase. The material is less likely to catch or snag hair that leads to breakage. Silk will also help to significantly reduce tangles.
