Products to Tame Frizzy Hair
From split ends that give people a case of “the frizzies” to the frizz that produces an all-over frizzy look, frizz can happen in any weather environment. The drier the hair and the more humid the air, the greater the likelihood that frizz will appear.
Hair frizzes when it’s dry. When individuals go out into a moist, humid environment the outer layer of hair begins to absorb the moisture. The salient point is that hair needs moisture for health and to avoid frizz. When examined under a microscope, each hair shaft has what looks like miniature shingles that “open” when exposed to moisture and cause the frizzy look.
Things to Avoid
The first thing to do to aid in reducing frizzies is to avoid products that contain sulfates, alcohol and silicone. Don’t wash hair in hot water as it strips the hair of its natural oils. Over styling will have the same effect, as will excessively touching hair. Towel drying should also be avoided. It essentially “roughs up” the hair cuticle and makes it stand up rather than lie flat.
Haircare Products
The exact products will vary according to the individual’s hair type. For people with fine hair, a hairspray alone may be enough to hold the style and keep hair cuticles flat. Those with curly or wavy hair will be best served by a mousse or crème to lock in moisture and help repair damaged hair.
Any product containing argan oil will moisturize hair without weighing it down. Argan oil has very small molecules that can penetrate the hair shaft easier than other types of beneficial oils. It penetrates deeper into the hair shaft.
Silk Pillowcase
While not normally considered a haircare product, silk pillowcases do more than aid in reducing skin wrinkles. They reduce the amount of friction as people move their head at night, thereby reducing the frizz factor. They’re beneficial for all hair types.
Check with a Stylist
Hair stylists are wizards of haircare. They know what type of products will work best on an individual’s hair to minimize frizz. They’ll also know which products are optimal for damaged or color-treated hair, along with those best to accommodate an individual’s lifestyle.
