Protecting your Hair from Heat Tools
Blow dryers, flatirons, curling wands, and heated curlers are essential styling tools. They also take a toll on your hair, robbing it of critical hydration. Fortunately, you have a variety of options and techniques you can use to minimize damage and protect your hair from heat tools, many of which can be used in combination.
One of the best and easiest ways to protect your hair is to simply lower the heat on your styling tools. Hotter isn’t better for your hair. You may even want to give your hair a break from styling tools. Experiment with alternative styles.
You can create a barrier between the heat and your hair by spritzing on a heat protectant to reduce damage. There are also heat protectant serums, along with those that can be applied in the shower and rinsed out in preparation for styling.
Ionic styling tools are another option. Hair has a positive charge and ionic styling tools emit negative ions. They neutralize each other and provide a chemical balance for smoother, healthier hair that retains more moisture. Others work by using moisture molecules in the hair and breaking them down, effectively redistributing them back to the hair.
Heat dehydrates hair, leaving it brittle and prone to breakage. Maintaining good hair hydration is a critical factor. Locks that are properly hydrated are less likely to be damaged or sustain as much damage over time. That means using a shampoo and conditioner that’s formulated for your type of hair.
Never use hot styling tools on wet hair and don’t leave the tools in one place too long to prevent “frying” your tresses. If a particular curl or section doesn’t turn out the way you’d like, don’t try to restyle until it’s cooled down.
A shine boosting oil applied directly after styling can give hair a super glossy look and help to replenish moisture. Just a drop or two is enough. An added benefit is that it will help reduce frizz.
