Styling Techniques for Showing Off Your Curls
Hairstyling for curly hair begins with some simple basics that are often overlooked when dealing with tresses that can sometimes be unruly. Your hair must be healthy and in good condition, for it to style easily and hold the desired shape.
Shampoo and Conditioner
Choose a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for curly hair. If you have color-treated hair, choose products that are crafted for curls. Hair that’s fine or thin can be weighed down by hydrating or smoothing formulas, but they’re also great for keeping curls and coils bouncy and tight. It’s a good idea to begin with 3 or 4 sample sizes of different products and monitor what works best before investing in full-size products.
Conditioning Masks
A hair mask used once a week is excellent for locking in moisture and is especially beneficial for hair that’s been highlighted or color-treated in any way. It can help repair damage and provide future protection.
Styling Products
Apply your styling products in the shower when your hair is thoroughly wet. It will help prevent the frizz that occurs when curls dry while enhancing texture.
Drying
Never rub or fluff curly locks with a towel. It roughens hair. Air drying is best or with a microfiber towel. If you don’t have a microfiber towel, use a soft T-shirt.
Taming Curls
Almost everyone has at least one area of hair that just doesn’t want to behave. You can help tame recalcitrant curls by pinning them close to the scalp. A texturizer can help, just be sure to use one that doesn’t contain alcohol. Hot styling tools are a fact of life, but never use a blow dryer without a diffuser to spread heat more evenly – and don’t forget to use a cooler setting.
Combing and Brushing
A wide-toothed comb is the best detangling tool you can use to work through curls. If you have tangles or knots, use a brush to brush down – never up. Start at the tips of hair and gradually work your way to the scalp until tangles are gone.
Sleep Care
Sleep on a silk pillowcase to prevent tangling and frizzing while you sleep. It’s also helpful to gather hair into a pineapple shape on top of your head and tie it loosely with a soft tie to mitigate tangling and snarling.
