Thin Hair Essentials

Thin hair isn’t the same as fine hair, though they have similarities. There are many reasons that hair may be thinning. It can be due to hormones as people age, medications, and health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems, along with inflammatory conditions that affect the scalp itself, nutritional deficiencies, and autoimmune conditions. However, one of the most common causes of thinning hair is stress.

Medical conditions can be diagnosed, mental health concerns addressed, and medications are available. If stress is the cause, steps can be taken to alleviate it. When hair thinning is a problem, it’s imperative that it be treated gently during that time, as it grows back in, and to prevent further damage in the future.

Thinning hair needs special care with gentle products that won’t result in additional damage or additional thinning. Thin hair tends to look flat, lifeless, and lack volume. The first step is a sulfate-free shampoo that removes build-up, nourishes, strengthens and adds volume. Conditioner is equally important and should perform the same function as the shampoo.

Thinning hair can be treated in a manner similar to fine hair. Gently wash and condition as needed in the shower. There are also products that can be left in the hair that will work to repair, restore and detangle to address breakage, since hair is at its most vulnerable when it’s wet.

Never rub hair dry – always pat it down with a towel – and never brush wet hair. Whenever possible, let hair air dry rather than blow drying it. If a blow dryer must be used, use a low setting and apply a product designed to protect against the heat. The same is true if curling irons and other heat-based styling devices are used.

It’s been said many times, but it bears repeating – “You are what you eat.” A great many people have deficiencies in their diet of which they’re not even aware. Hair needs nutrients to grow and maintain health. A full-spectrum vitamin supplement is an alternative for those that can’t or won’t alter their diet.

Last, but not least, see a professional stylist. He/she will be able to provide information on caring for thinning hair, recommend products, and assist with a good cut that minimizes the appearance of thinning hair and be easy to care for.
