Top Hair Washing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
If you thought of giving your hair a good wash just involved a quick once over with some shampoo and conditioner in the shower, think again. The way we wash our hair, as well as the products we use, could be leaving it looking dull and lifeless or feeling oily and over processed.
If your hair doesn’t feel squeaky clean and full of bounce when you leave the shower, see if you are making any of these common hair washing mistakes:
- Have you brushed it out before showering?
Start your hair washing routine the right way by taking out any bands or clips and gently brushing from the roots to the ends before you jump in the shower. This way, you will be loosening dirt, removing stray hairs, untangling knots, and removing products like hairspray or dry shampoo before you hit the water.
- Is your hair wet enough?
Ducking under the shower quickly before using shampoo often means that your hair is not wet enough all over to produce a really good soapy lather. In order for shampoo to be effective, your hair really needs to be wet through before you apply it.
- Is the water the right temperature?
As tempting as it is to linger in a hot, steamy shower, water that is too hot can have a detrimental effect on your hair, especially if it is colored. Very hot water actually opens the hair cuticles, allowing keratin proteins and color molecules to escape, meaning that hair loses strength and the color fades. Try to keep the temperature as cool as is bearable if you want to step out with amazing looking hair.
- Are you being gentle enough?
Scrubbing at your scalp like a dirty carpet is not good for either your skin or your hair. Wet hair is weaker than dry hair and more prone to breaking. Rather than going at it like a crazy person, stroke your scalp from the forehead to the nape of the neck, and then along the sides to prevent breakage or the overproduction of oils that can lead to oily looking hair.
- Are you targeting the right areas?
Shampoo and conditioner serve different purposes and should not be used all over. Shampoo only needs to be used on the areas for he hair that gets really dirty like your roots, bangs, and hairline where day to day grime and natural oils meet. Conditioner however only needs to be used on the dry areas of your hair which is from to mid-length section down to the ends. Getting this balance right can completely change the way your hair looks and feels after a wash.
- Are you still using a shampoo with sulfates?
Once upon a time, we believed that the better the lather the better the shampoo. Turns out this is fake news and that in fact, the sulfates that produce that luxurious lather can actually strip the scalp of the naturally produced oils its need to be healthy. Stick to gentle sulfate-free shampoos to keep your hair healthy.
- Are you rinsing it clear?
Making sure you have rinsed everything out of your hair is equally as important as what you put in it. Leaving shampoo or condition in your hair can make it feel oily and leave it looking lackluster.
