Warm Weather Hair Care
There’s more to hair care during the summer months than meets the eye. Heat, humidity and UV rays takes a toll on all types of hair. There are definite steps that anyone can take to maintain hair health and keep locks looking great during the summer.
Protection
Wear a hat, scarf or headwrap when going outside. UV rays damage the hair’s cuticle, dries out locks, and contributes to frizziness. Wide-brimmed hats are best, as they also provide a measure of protection for the face and ears. Hats can be a fun accessory.
Limit Heat Tools
Limiting the use of styling tools that use heat is a good idea any time of the year. Using them in the summer months exacerbates heat-related damage from the climate.
Wash and Condition
It’s tempting to wash hair more often during the summer. Doing so contributes to dryness, while stripping hair and scalp of essential oils.
Use a deep conditioning treatment to add moisture. It also aids in protecting hair from the sun and environmental factors.
Keep it Trimmed
Trimming eliminates split ends on hair of all lengths. Hair typically grows faster during the summer.
Tie it Up
Doing so limits exposure to the sun and it also helps minimize sweaty hair. Try ponytails, braids, buns, twists, or an updo.
Swim Hair
Whether it’s chlorine in pools or ocean salt, they damage hair. The best solution is to wear a swim cap, but there are also shampoos and conditioners designed to minimize damage from swimming.
Color Treatments
Summer heat, UV rays, ocean salt, and chlorine in pools have a detrimental effect on color-treated hair. It’s a good idea to forego color treatments in the summer whenever possible. For those that do have color-treated locks, use products specifically designed for color-treated hair.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking sufficient water is critical for the body and it also works to hydrate hair.
