Ways to Add Shine to Your Dull Hair

Shiny hair conveys a sense of youth, health, and has an element of physics attached to it. Shiny hair is the reflection of light from and through the hair’s cuticle. If you weren’t born with blindingly shiny hair or your locks are showing the effects of styling tools and color treatments, don’t despair. You have plenty of ways to restore a diamond-like shine to your mane.

Clarifying Shampoo

Residue and build-up from hair products is a leading cause of dull hair. A clarifying shampoo will remove all the product build-up from your hair. It’s appropriate for any type of hair, but don’t use it too often as it also removes natural oils. Use a clarifying shampoo and follow it up with deep conditioning. If you spend a lot of time in the ocean or pool, you may have to use it more often due to salt and chlorine.

Moisturize

Healthy, shiny hair is hydrated and one of the easiest ways to give your hair the moisture it craves is with a lightweight conditioner rich in oils such as almond, olive, coconut, argan, jojoba or avocado. It works to smooth cracks in hair strands. You can also apply a few drops of lightweight hair oil to add luster. Adding a humidifier in your bedroom at night can aid in moisturizing your hair.

Cold Water

A hot shower may feel wonderful, but it’s not good for your hair and dries it out. A very cool rinse, or even a cold-water rinse if you have the fortitude, will seal cuticles, help the shaft lay flat, and even help keep color in longer.

Styling Tools

A sure way to dull your hair’s shine is using high heat settings on your blow dryer and styling tools. Air drying is best, but if you must use a blow dryer or styling tools, use a cool setting. There are also drying turbans that help dry hair up to 50 percent quicker and is gentler on locks than towels. Never comb or brush wet hair to minimize breakage.
