Ways to Create Great Curls!

Bouncy curls are sexy and flirty, but obtaining them typically involves hot styling tools that can damage hair. Anyone can get those sporty curls with a little practice and the right styling products. There are ways to get curls with or without hot styling tools and individuals can try both to see what works best for them.

Without Hot Tools

There are different ways that can be utilized without hot styling tools. A press and twist method of drying imparts gentle curls without the frizz of rough drying. Use a wide-toothed comb to untangle in the shower and then leave it alone. Feathering the ends also encourages curls.

No one wants to take the time to use old-fashioned foam rollers, but it may be the only method that works on some types of hair. Don’t discount using pin curls – they can be very effective. Be sure to use a curl defining spray, mousse or gel before rolling or pin curling.

With Hot Tools

It’s important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, especially for those with naturally straight hair. A leave-in conditioner works best. Air dry wet hair to about 90 percent, then use a diffuser on the lowest setting, at the same time cupping sections of hair and using an upward scrunching motion. Stubborn strands will need a curling iron or wand with a barrel that’s smaller than the desired curl size.

For those with wavy hair, create definition with a styling foam designed to enhance curl. Finger comb it through hair to fight frizz. When using hot styling tools, frizz will be a concern. Once hair has been curled in the desired manner, spritz on a hairspray designed to fight frizz and the effects of humidity. Flat, mishappen and recalcitrant curls can be addressed by securing them with bobby pins for approximately 10 minutes to create ringlets.
